An alarming trend has prompted Ohio Department of Health officials to speak out; and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to update their recommendations. They might simply call them Juuls, vapes - whatever the product is. Pulmonary disease is a condition that restricts the flow of air to the lungs.

"U.S. health officials have identified about 450 possible illness cases in 33 states, including as many as five deaths". The count includes newly reported deaths in California, Indiana, and Minnesota. Many health experts are concerned about marketing of e-cigarettes seemingly aimed at youths, including "fruity flavours" and colourful advertisements and are seeking tighter restrictions on sales and marketing. The electronic devices heat liquid into vapor - very small particles that users inhale.

FDA and state public health departments are testing samples of nicotine, THC, and other chemicals used in vaping products to try to find a common compound. But numerous sickened, though not all, were people who said they had been vaping THC, the chemical that gives marijuana its high.

Illustrative: Vaping devices that were confiscated from students in such places as restrooms or hallways at a United States school. Some patients also experience nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, fatigue, fever and weight loss, with the gastrointestinal problems sometimes preceding the respiratory symptoms. Some have been sick to the stomach, felt very exhausted, suffered weight loss or developed high body temperatures. They also warned against modifying vape products or adding any substances to these products that are not intended by the manufacturer. Many patients report using e-cigarette products with liquids that contain cannabinoid products, such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Nova Scotia's chief medical officer of health has said he is sending informal email inquiries to respiratory specialists and intensive care units at Nova Scotia hospitals to see if there are any similar cases to what is happening in the U.S.

NY state has focused its investigation on an ingredient called Vitamin E acetate, which has been used to thicken marijuana vape juice but is considered unsafe if heated and inhaled.

E-cigarette companies operate with a Wild West mentality. Others have been sickened by vaping a chemical containing THC and vitamin E acetate. The mixture is considered risky if heated and inhaled.

In Kings County, where eight cases were reported in July and August, public health officials found that the victims had purchased unlicensed vaping products from "pop-up" cannabis dealers.

One report noted that most of the 53 illnesses reported in IL and Wisconsin were related to THC vaping products.

Howard launched his vaping operation in 2010, after his personal use of e-cigarettes helped him kick his 20-year smoking habit.

Steven Schandler, a psychology professor who studies risk factors with substance abuse, said that adolescents may be more likely to vape because they want to be accepted. "We urge the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to speed up the regulation of e-cigarettes and remove all unregulated products from the market", Dr. Patrice Harris, president of the American Medical Association, said in a statement.

Doctor David Christiani is with the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in MA. They confirmed three deaths and noted another is under investigation.

The South Dakota QuitLine offers free coaching to quit tobacco and vaping product use. According to the Louisiana Department of Health, nine of the cases reported came from Louisiana.

All the cases that are reported by the health officials of the state have the youth involved in them.

At a most recent count, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports at least 450 cases of pulmonary disease associated with vaping in half of USA states.
