As of 2 p.m. ET, the storm was about 185 miles east of West Palm Beach, Florida.

The NHC official track forecast predicts the onset of tropical storm force winds early Monday in south central Florida. While landfall is possible along the East Coast from Florida to the Carolinas, many models project it staying just off Florida's coast Tuesday, then skirting the coasts of Georgia and North and SC, with any landfall as yet uncertain.

SC and Georgia's governors ordered mandatory coastline evacuations beginning at noon on Labor Day and school and state office closings on Tuesday, as the historic hurricane took aim at the East Coast.

Hurricane Dorian is now a Category 5 with maximum sustained winds of 175 miles per hour.

"We were thinking about Florida evacuations, but it's a little bit too soon", Trump said, according to NBC News. "But a couple of models are still indicating that we could see that landfall along the east coast".

A hurricane warning means that hurricane conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area. The hurricane was moving to the west at 5 miles per hour (7 kph).

Over two or three days, the slow-moving hurricane could dump as much as 4ft of rain, unleash devastating winds and whip up a risky storm surge, said private meteorologist Ryan Maue, seconding some of the most reliable computer models.

The official forecast path for Dorian curves the storm away from the area before it strikes land. He said it's the "safest place" to be in hurricane in Central Florida.

The hurricane is expected to continue battering Grand Bahama through Monday, before moving close to Florida's coast Monday night through Wednesday evening.

A spokesperson for the government of the Bahamas said Dorian was expected to impact some 73,000 residents and 21,000 homes.

The potential path of Hurricane Dorian, a Category 5 storm, is seen in this graphic released by the National Hurricane Center on September 1, 2019.

With sustained winds of up to 150 miles per hour, Dorian is expected to deliver its full wrath late Sunday and early Monday near the Abacos Islands and Grand Bahama, areas where some 73,000 people live. Any deviation of Dorian's core to the left would result in an increase in the winds along the east coast of Florida. "They've got no defense to this storm and it's going to churn over there; it's going to dump perhaps two feet of rain on the Bahamas".

Julia Eaddy, 70, in Titusville, Florida, said she and her husband had ridden out several hurricanes before and were not fazed by the forecast.

According to the National Hurricane Center, some fluctuations in intensity are likely, but Dorian is expected to remain a powerful hurricane during the next few days.

Destructive winds from Hurricane Dorian are spreading across the Bahamas' northernmost island.

"This is a life-threatening situation. Do not venture into the eye if it passes over your location".

Residents of the Abacos, where Dorian first hit, are advised to remain in their shelters until conditions subside later Monday.

Construction codes require homes to have metal reinforcements for roof beams to withstand winds into the upper limits of a Category 4 hurricane, and compliance is generally tight for residents who can afford it.

The advisory read: "Catastrophic Category 5 Dorian continuing to intensify as it approaches the Abaco Islands". We deliver the best in breaking news, live video coverage, and original journalism covering topics that matter most to Floridians.

In the northern stretches of the Bahamas archipelago, hotels closed, residents boarded up homes and officials hired boats to move people from low-lying areas to bigger islands as Dorian approached.
