Through her activism around the world, Greta encourages other students and citizens to protest and strike for governments to reduce fossil fuel emissions, but President Trump supports the coal, oil and gas industries and doesn't support the building of renewable sources like solar and wind.

"Just 16, @GretaThunberg is already one of our planet's greatest advocates", the former president later tweeted.

Thunberg arrived last week in Washington, where she has maintained a busy schedule: demonstrating in front of the White House, attending an event with United States senators and indigenous leaders from South America, and, later Wednesday, meeting with children who are suing the government for climate inaction.

Previous demonstrations have seen children pull themselves out of school in their droves and picket, pushing the message that more needs to done to protect their generation from the devastating impact of climate change. Thunberg said this argument works both ways.

"I am submitting this report as my testimony because I don't want you to listen to me, I want you to listen to the scientists", she said.

It's being used against you as well". Students will be more directly affected by climate change in the years to come, and taking part in the strike will show world leaders that the people who take the most issue with climate change will not be silenced.

Standing on the steps of the Supreme Court, 19-year-old Xiuhtezcatl Martinez from Boulder said his concerns about climate change were spelled out in smoke on the skyline.

In remarks meant for Congress as a whole, she said: "I know you are trying but just not hard enough".

Can we say the same about the climate strike? "We hear what you're saying and we will redouble our efforts".
