BU advanced two spots, to number 40, in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings of National Universities, released Monday.

The media company, known for its rankings, released its 2020 Best Colleges list of over 1,400 colleges and universities on September 9. In addition, it ranked No. 218 overall in the country out of the 350+ institutions surveyed.

Higher education institutions in California took most of the top five spots on a new list of the Best Colleges for Veterans among national universities.

Los Angeles repeated as the top public school among national universities this year.

The institution has also been ranked #1 among liberal arts colleges in a new U.S. News ranking on social mobility.

Meanwhile, Olin College of Engineering in Needham ranked third on a list for the best undergraduate engineering programs, and Babson College in Wellesley ranked first in the entrepreneurship category.

Florida State University and the University of Miami have more than just lackluster football records in common: They also share a No. 57 ranking on the national university list.

About 13% of ranked schools moved into different categories this year, so a university ranked previously as a regional university may now be a national university. For comparison, the median starting salary for alumni of Stanford University is $73,800 and the median starting salary for alumni of UC Santa Barbara is $55,600.

When analyzed for social mobility - its success at enrolling and graduating large numbers of disadvantaged students awarded with low-income Pell Grants - Cal Poly ranked No. 87 in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report.

"We are thrilled to see our progress reflected in this year's numbers", says Jean Morrison, University provost and chief academic officer. Princeton University is the best university in America, followed by Harvard University (No. 2), and Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Yale University, which tied for third.
