Large part of Hard Rock Hotel construction site collapses in New Orleans

He said the top six floors of the building collapsed and that the rest of the construction is still "very unstable".

At least one person is dead and several people are unaccounted for, according to Louisiana State Governor John Bel Edwards.

NOLA Ready tweeted that the New Orleans Fire Department is now evacuating nearby buildings. He confirmed three people are still missing, and it is unknown whether they walked off from the site or are trapped.

Authorities say 18 people were injured.

"It's still a very risky situation", he said.

A scary scene was captured on video this Saturday morning showing a large portion of the Hard Rock Hotel on Canal Street collapsing onto the road. "The crane is still in place but it is unsupported and very unsafe".

News outlets report construction workers ran to safety as the Hard Rock Hotel, which was under construction, came crashing down.

A large steel beam, hoisted up by one of the cranes, swayed in the air above the portion of the building that collapsed, WWL-TV reported.

Authorities urged people to follow NOLA Ready on social media, which will tweet out updates.

The cause wasn't immediately known.

Construction plans for the 350-room hotel include a 12,000 square foot event space, two ballrooms and a residential space, according to a news release. He witnessed the collapse from a Tulane School of Public Health classroom in a nearby building. It looked like the concrete just slid from the top all the way down to the street. The rubble slid off the side of the building in insane video captured by onlookers in the street. Plans were unveiled past year.
