Police said on Twitter earlier they were looking for at least one suspect. The attack took place near both a synagogue and a kebab shop, local media and a witness said.

The second shooting happened in Landsberg, about 15 kilometres east of Halle.

"The suspected perpetrators fled in a auto", said police on Twitter, urging residents in the area to stay indoors.

A short time later, police reported the arrest. Guardian reported that police has asked people to remain on alert. "We have deployed forces in and around Halle and are trying to stabilise the situation until we have all the relevant information".

The shooting took place in the city's Paulusviertel district near where a synagogue is located, police said.
