Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has submitted a formal notice that the United States is withdrawing from the Paris climate deal.

Meyer continued: "All too many people are already experiencing the costly and harmful impacts of climate change in the form of rising seas, more intense hurricanes and wildfires, and record-breaking temperatures. We urge you to protect the future of the American public, American businesses, and American security by upholding the USA commitment to the Paris Agreement under the UNFCCC".

The European Union expressed disappointment. Following earlier promises by President Donald Trump, the USA this week began the formal process of pulling out of the deal.

"We will continue to work with USA states, cities and civil society in support of climate action". President Donald Trump rightly seized the opportunity.

Furthermore, the withdrawal of the US from the agreement could potentially imperil the survival and efficacy of the entire treaty, as other countries could feel discouraged from upholding their commitments to reduce emissions. The Obama administration was the main driver behind the Paris agreement, and the USA must be a global leader in the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. His statement touted America's carbon pollution cuts and called the Paris deal an "unfair economic burden" to the usa economy.

According to a report from five senior scientists, three-quarters of national commitments under the Paris climate accord to curb greenhouse gases will not even slow the accelerating pace of global warming. USA emissions of criteria air pollutants that impact human health and the environment declined by 74% between 1970 and 2018.

Trump campaigned on a promise to rescind that pledge, saying it would hurt the US economy while leaving other big polluters like China to increase emissions. The accords went into effect November 4, 2016. "To cause that with only 15 years of emissions is quite staggering". Because of the expected withdrawal, the US role in 2020 negotiations will be reduced, experts said.

The next United Nations climate summit will begin in Madrid in December.

The Democrats slammed the Trump Administration for the decision.

Environmental groups also slammed the move.

"We declare, clearly and unequivocally, that planet Earth is facing a climate emergency", the statement said.

The Paris Agreement, eventually signed by 197 nations, including the US, sets a framework for curbing greenhouse gas emissions and ensuring global temperatures do not exceed 2 degrees Celsius of pre-industrial eras.

The document will declare the "irreversibility of the Paris accord", according to the French presidency on Tuesday, which also lamented the U.S. decision to leave the climate accord.

"Unlike the president, these leaders understand that reducing emissions creates jobs and protects local communities, while it is inaction on climate that poses the real threat to prosperity".

Until its formal exit, the United States will continue to participate in negotiations over technical aspects of the agreement, represented by career State Department officials.
