The former New Zealand spinner was a part of the England coaching setup in their recent T20I series against New Zealand.

The 39-year-old Patel has retired from his nearly two-decade first-class career with Wellington in New Zealand to take up the spin bowling consultant role with the England team.

Due to this appointment, Patel will end his long career with Wellington later this month.

He will play his last game for the Firebirds in the Super Smash against Central Stags at the Basin Reserve on December 18.

Former New Zealand spinner Jeetan Patel has earned him a good name as an off-spinner during his playing days.

Patel, who made 78 global appearances, he has also played county cricket for Warwickshire, alongside the current England men's team director Ashley Giles. In particular, he added a yard of pace to his offspin and developed into a far more consistent, though still aggressive, lower-order batsman. Patel has a fair amount of knowledge of English conditions as well, having played for Warwickshire. Feisty and competitive on the pitch, Patel gained a reputation as a positive, nurturing captain at Warwickshire.

Moeen Ali, who is on an agreed break from Test consideration, is also rested for the white-ball leg of the tour.

He will also play a significant role during England's Test tour of Sri Lanka starting in March 2020 when Joe Root's side plays a two-match Test series as part of the ICC World Test Championship.
