"After a lot of reflection and discussion after the season, I realized that a move to the offensive coordinator is ultimately the best thing for our team", said Vic Fangio, Broncos head coach, in a statement on Sunday. "We must do everything we can to improve - in all areas - if we work early next year".
The sides are expected to finalize a deal in the coming days, sources said.
The next offensive coordinator will be fifth in five seasons for the Broncos, with Scangarello following Bill Musgrave, Mike McCoy and Rick Dennison.
Denver ranked 28th in the National Football League in points per game (17.6) and yards per game (298.6) in 2019. I'm sure there are opportunities for some guys. However, after meetings and evaluations of the team's performance, Fangio pivoted as he informed Scangarello of the decision to fire him while reeling in Shurmur. Shurmur, 54, has experience as an offensive coordinator with the then St. Louis Rams, Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings.
Brandon Allen won one of three starts before rookie QB Drew Lock took over and won four of his five starts, leading general manager John Elway to declare Lock the incumbent heading into 2020.
Scangarello came to the Mile High city in 2019 after being the San Francisco quarterbacks coach from 2017-2018.
