As good as the Bison defense has been, James Madison-the only team other than North Dakota State to win an FCS title over the past eight years-has a defense that may have been even better.

Story Line - The greatest dynasty continued with North Dakota State winning a third straight FCS title and eighth in the last seasons.

The Bison have now won 37 consecutive games after capping off their flawless (16-0) campaign in 2019-2020. The only two Division I winning streaks longer than NDSU are Washington (40, from 1908-14) and Oklahoma's record 48 in a row was 1953-57.

"It was a piece we were familiar with", Hendricks told reporters. Both teams have first-year head coaches, with Curt Cignetti having the edge with this being his ninth year overall as a head coach, but Matt Entz has the advantage of being at North Dakota State since 2014. "Honestly, they called us well".

"They picked our guy and I just left my guy and knew they were going to throw it and trusted that he was going to make the throw to the flat and not the guy I was supposed to cover". I did the piece and the rest is history.

North Dakota State used some trickery to score twice in the second quarter. Receiver Phoenix Sproles swept around and faked a reverse handoff before running 38 yards for a touchdown, and Hendricks lined up for an apparent field goal wen he took the snap, then got up and ran to the end zone.

Lance was only 6-of-10 passing for 72 yards and carried the ball a season-high 30 times for the Bison.

James Madison scored another field goal in the first round of the second half. Until Saturday, James Madison hadn't allowed more than 118 rushing yards in a game this season. According to ESPN, the Dukes had the best SP+ defensive numbers for any school in all of college football, and showed it when they held West Virginia to 20 points, in a game James Madison led 7-0 at halftime.
