The Absolute Best Reactions to Monday’s Oscar Nominations

While that's been touted as a beauty no-no for years, J.Lo's latest look proves that it can be an effortlessly elegant way to make your fashion pieces stand out.

On Monday, when the complete list of Oscar nominations for 2020 were released, Margot scored a nod in the "Best Supporting Actress" category. Cate Blanchett did it in 2008 for Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and I'm Not There, Jamie Foxx did it in 2005 for Ray and Collateral, and in 1994 there were two actresses nominated in two categories: Holly Hunter for The Piano and The Firm, and Emma Thompson for The Remains of the Day and In the Name of the Father. But it was this morning's reactions from celebrities and Oscar nominees that best summed up the news.

Bong Joon-ho's class satire "Parasite" has six nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. He also congratulated "Waterboy" actress Kathy Bates a.k.a. "Mama", who was nominated for her performance in Clint Eastwood's "Richard Jewell". That snarky old line - "Did this picture direct itself?" - no more applies to her than it does to her partner Noah Baumbach, who failed to get a Best Director nod to go with the Best Picture one for "Marriage Story".

In the history of the Oscars, only five women have ever been nominated for best director - including Gerwig, for 2017's "Lady Bird". She's the third person to get acting and songwriting nominations for the same film, and all were recent.

Oscars Shut Out Women in Best Director Category Again
Lorene Scafaria ( Hustlers ) and Marielle Heller ( A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood ) had also been in the conversation. Though director Greta Gerwig scored a nod for Best Adapted Screenplay, she was shut out of the Best Director category.

Scarlett Johansson, left, and Adam Driver in Marriage Story.

Yes, Robert De Niro may already have his fair share of Oscars gold on the mantlepiece (he previously won for his roles in Raging Bull and The Godfather Part II), yet the actor was unable to secure a nomination for the Irishman. Other documentaries that have been nominated for the same category include "The Cave", "The Edge of Democracy", "For Sama" and "Honeyland". And his cousin, Randy Newman, is nominated for both original score and original song this year.

As soon as the Oscar nominations were revealed to the public on Monday, the controversy started pouring in with the various snubs. "The Farewell" star Awkwafina, who recently became the first Asian woman to win Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical at the Golden Globes, and "Farewell" director Lulu Wang were not included in the nominations. In Hollywood came close seconds, both nabbing 10 nominations each.
