The Best Reactions to Monday’s Oscar Nominations

Add to that nominations for the achievement in cinematography, costume design, film editing, production design, and visual effects awards (along with a nomination for best adapted screenplay, which it shares with Joker), and Netflix has to be feeling good about The Irishman heading into the show.

Referencing a notable moment from the Lorene Scafaria movie, one fan tweeted about Jennifer Lopez's snub: "Jennifer Lopez could and should crush each member of the Academy with her thighs while Fiona Apple blares in the background and Cardi B hisses and claps in approval". "Congratulations to those men", she said, after the all-male honorees were listed for the category. The only Black actor who received an Oscar nomination was Cynthia Erivo for playing Harriet Tubman in Harriet.

The only woman to have ever won this award was Kathryn Bigelow in 2009 for The Hurt Locker.

South Korean class satire "Parasite", from Bong Joon-ho, secured the final best director slot, meaning once again no women made the shortlist.

Jennifer Lopez: Jenny from the block, of Puerto Rican origin, lost what was considered a guaranteed place in the Best Supporting Actress category despite her acclaimed turn as stripper Ramona Vega in Hustlers. You know we're probably going to watch the February 9th ceremony anyway - but if the night doesn't end with the words "and the Oscar for best picture goes to.Parasite", you can be certain our knives will be out.

LHC Declares Special Court for Musharraf Trial 'Unconstitutional'
The petition said that the constitution of a special court for hearing the case against Pervez Musharraf was unconstitutional . Musharraf, 76, who seized power in a 1999 coup and ruled as president until 2008, is now receiving medical treatment in Dubai.

"This is something that nobody would have imagined happening ..." Nominating "Dolemite is My Name" for Best Picture, for instance, would have been a nice grace note.

Only nine foreign-language films have even been nominated.

Issa Rae, who co-hosted the Academy's Oscar announcement along with John Cho, threw some delicious shade at the Academy for failing to nominate a single female director.

Considering Joker was far from a critical favourite and divided audiences with its portrayal of an isolated loner, the Academy's overwhelming support for the film was unexpected. Had Awkwafina been nominated for a Best Actress Oscar, she would have been only the second woman of Asian descent after Indian-born Merle Oberon to have been acknowledged by the Academy. Who are the sizeable percentage of the Academy's director's branch who thought Todd Phillips deserved to join a club that's been denied to all but five women in 92 years?
