Jeff Bezos just bought the most expensive house ever sold in Los Angeles, and he's not going to have to worry about mortgage payments: With an estimated net worth of $131 billion, the Amazon founder could have bought the $165 million mansion nearly 800 times over.

Geffen purchased the Warner Estate in 1990 for $47.5 million, a then-record price for a Los Angeles-area home, according to the Journal.

The 9.4-acre (3.8-hectare) property sold by Geffen to Bezos - in a deal first reported by the Wall Street Journal - boasts a stately Hollywood pedigree all its own. The 13,600-square-foot Georgian-style mansion has expansive terraces and gardens, two guesthouses, nursery and three hothouses, tennis court, swimming pool, nine-hole golf course and motor court complete with its own service garage and gas pumps.

One of the properties he visited was an eight-acre estate in Bel Air that's seeking $225 million, said Shawn Elliott, a broker with Nest Seekers International, which has listed the property. Bezos' purchase eclipses the last record set in the Los Angeles area - the $US150 million purchase of the Chartwell estate by Lachlan Murdoch previous year.

In addition to the $165 million he paid Geffen for the Warner Estate, his venture capital firm Bezos Expeditions paid $90 million to buy a tract of undeveloped Los Angeles land from the estate of the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, the source told Reuters. The legendary estate is also known as the Jack Warner Estate, built by the former head of Warner Bros.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is the world's richest man.

Bezos and girlfriend Lauren Sanchez had been house hunting in the Beverly Hills area for a while, as reported by the New York Post earlier this month.

Bezos reportedly also splashed out $80 million on a few NY apartments earlier this year. His estimated net worth is around $131 billion. Bezos had also purchased two other houses below the penthouse apartment.

Bezos' record purchase price may not last long. He recently spent $80 million on three adjacent NY apartments, including a three-floor penthouse.
