His lap was 46.305 sec/194.582 miles per hour around the 2.5-mile superspeedway.

"I'm really proud to put our Kroger Chevy on the pole on "Kroger pole day" for the Daytona 500", Stenhouse said.

It marked Stenhouse's third NASCAR Cup Series pole, but his first for the Daytona 500.

Last year, Trump also praised retired driver Mario Andretti, the Daytona 500 victor in 1967, reminiscing about a ride Andretti gave him in a race auto for his reality show "The Apprentice". It was Stenhouse's third NASCAR Cup pole and his first at Daytona. Obviously, we've got quite a few Hendrick cars lined up behind us. They've been working hard, they've are in my corner and they've been behind me throughout my career. "I feel pretty confident we can both show what we can do together".

"I know Brian believes in what JTG has back at the shop, the engines we have and resources available".

Stenhouse has been successful at Daytona and Talladega Superspeedway earning prior wins.

Just missing the front row were another pair of Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolets, with two-time Daytona 500 pole victor Chase Elliott (46.319/194.305) and seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson (46.419/193.886) timing in third- and fourth-fastest, respectively.

Roar! to close to Storm Dennis | Weather
A yellow warning is the lowest level, rising in severity through amber to red for the most severe weather. Although Storm Dennis is now not expected to be as severe as Ciara, disruption is still likely.

Defending race victor Denny Hamlin was fifth fastest.

"Everybody at HMS puts so much effort into these speedway cars", Bowman said.

"I'm very thankful for all the guys in the engine shop, fab shop and testing shop". With a 40-car field, that means three drivers will be freed up from racing on Sunday.

"My team built a really fast Kroger Chevrolet", he told FOX Business' Stuart Varney and he added that "I just went [and] held the throttle down".

Stenhouse was the 18th vehicle to run and had to sit through the rest of the 43-car field until he knew he secured the top spot for the February 16 race, where he finished a career-best seventh in 2014.

Next on-track action are the Duel 150s on Thursday evening to determine the 62 annual Daytona 500 starting line up.
