Warren noted that she has called for an independent Justice Department task force to investigate alleged crimes by Trump administration officials and called on all other Democratic candidates to commit to doing the same, "so Trump officials know they will be held accountable by career prosecutors once he is out of office".

Republican lawmakers, who almost all voted to acquit Trump of impeachment charges, offered muted criticism of the president but shrugged off suggestions they should investigate whether his political concerns were influencing law enforcement.

Trump tweeted a congratulations to Barr "for taking charge of a case that was totally out of control and perhaps should not have been brought".

The White House and the Justice Department both denied that Mr Trump had influenced the decision to seek a shorter sentence.

There is one person well-known to Stone who says a pardon is in the works: conspiracy theorist and former Stone associate Alex Jones.

But on Tuesday, after Trump tweeted that the recommendation was "horrible and very unfair", the Justice Department changed course.

Reality check: Stone was convicted by a jury on seven counts related to lying about his efforts to learn when WikiLeaks would publish damaging emails about Hillary Clinton during the 2016 election. He is due to be sentenced on February 20.

A Justice Department official said authorities made a decision to step in and seek a shorter sentence because they had been taken by surprise by the initial recommendation.

There are more than 750,000 illegal Israeli settlers now in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, according to Palestinian officials. It says that some business activity in the Occupied Palestinian Territory raises human rights concerns.

After the action was announced, the four prosecutors who won Stone's conviction - Aaron Zelinsky, Adam Jed, Michael Marando and Jonathan Kravis - withdrew from the case.

Congressman Eric Swalwell (D-CA) told CNN anchor Jake Tapper on Wednesday that while Democrats in the House of Representatives do not "wake up in the morning wanting to impeach" President Trump, no options are off the table in response to Roger Stone's new sentencing.

The White House declined to comment on Liu's nomination or to say whether Trump would pardon Stone or Flynn.

Democrats plan to ask Barr about the department's decision to overrule four federal prosecutors on the amount of prison time recommended for Stone.

"Trump is going around getting even with people. But we're not going to let him just torch this democracy because he thinks that he's been let off once and we're not going to do something about it", Swalwell said. He later told reporters he didn't speak to Justice Department officials, though he said he could if he wanted.

Several Republicans said Trump should not have shared his opinion about the Stone case.

"The president should not have gotten involved", said Sen.

The committee says they are now in the process of raising money to help defray the cost of Stone's legal bills in the event of a likely appeal "and to establish a fund to care for his wife Nydia and their family" who have apparently been "left destitute after paying millions in legal fees".
