As the Coronavirus pandemic has sent almost the entire world in a lockdown situation, nearly 800 cruise passengers in Australia will be quarantined on an island, home to hundred of the country's "cutest marsupials" - the quokkas.

Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan said he would ask the national government to call in the navy if the ship refused to move on from Australian waters.

A spokesman for the UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "We are doing all we can to help British people on board the Vasco de Gama cruise ship".

"I have been in contact with the Federal Government to make clear our position", he said.

The state's chief health officer said NSW Health is expecting to see an increase in people testing positive to COVID-19.

Australian authorities are demanding a German cruise ship leave Australian waters after it received confirmation that seven of its passengers are positive for COVID-19.

The ship, operated by Carnival Corp's Princess Cruises, had more than 700 coronavirus cases.

Australian sates have cracked down on arrivals from cruise ships following the Ruby Princess' disembarkation Sydney, after which 130 passengers were found to have coronavirus.

Russia, which announced the death of two patients who tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday, is expected to follow suit. In France, health authorities reported 231 new deaths from Covid-19 yesterday, taking the total to 1,331.

"The Magnifica and Artania both need to leave and go back to their port of origin and leave as soon as possible", said McGowan.

There was little health authorities could do to prevent the disembarkation of asymptomatic cruise passengers, she said on Wednesday. "We want to make sure that those Australians are able to return".

Steve and Tina Dixon, an asthmatic diagnosed with the virus, had to rely on a good Samaritan for food after arriving in the city where they had no friends or family, and were unable to register for a home delivery account at a local supermarket.

Some state leaders have also flagged they are willing to push for tougher restrictions on social activities if Prime Minister Scott Morrison's government does not move fast enough.

Police will patrol beaches on what is set to be a sunny weekend, after crowds at Sydney's Bondi last weekend frustrated officials and set off a round of tighter curbs. As per global media reports, 800 people will be housed in the existing and vacated island, which includes a hostel, bungalows, cabins and dormitories.

Further job losses are also expected, with some economists expecting Australian unemployment rate to double this year to more than 11%.

With the number of Covid-19 cases rising quickly, Australia has introduced a series of restrictions, including the forced closure of pubs, restaurants and cinemas.
