WH Urges People Who Left NY Recently To Self-Quarantine

"No matter where they have gone, whether it's Florida, North Carolina, or out to the far reaches of Long Island, we are starting to see new cases across Long Island that suggests people have left the city", Birx told reporters.

"It means that since they still at 31 percent mortality compared to the other regions of the country that we can have a huge impact if we unite together", Birx said, adding that it is "critical" that everyone is following new presidential guidelines (pdf) put out by the White House Coronavirus Task Force on March 15.

In an extraordinary escalation of steps taken to mitigate the spread of coronavirus from NY, the White House announced that all visitors who recently left the city to self-quarantine for two weeks.

Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida had already mandated that travelers from New York, New Jersey and CT do so. Pence said that public health officials are seeing one infection for every 1,000 people in the NY area compared to 0.1 or 0.2 per 1,000 people in places like Washington state - where the first major outbreak occurred in the U.S.

Her message was reiterated by Vice President Mike Pence, who said the federal government is dealing with NY as "a high-risk area" and will continue to surge resources to the region. But what we're seeing now is that understandably, people want to get out of NY.

"It's a very serious situation, they've [New Yorkers have] suffered terribly through no fault of their own", he said. "As in all places, they have to be following the presidential guildelines".

On Monday afternoon, the Prime Minister was accused of blaming New South Wales for the Ruby Princess debacle. One confirmed case can infect two and a half people.

"The idea, if you look at the statistics, it's disturbing".

Deborah Birx and Anthony Fauci, two of the top members on the White House coronavirus task force, directly addressed people leaving NY as cases of coronavirus rise in the state.

Earlier on Tuesday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that the state is expecting a sudden surge in the need of respirators.

"You pick the 26,000 people who are going to die", he said.

It is estimated that about one out of every 1,000 residents in NY is infected - a rate that is eight to 10 times higher than other areas.
