Florida governor Ron DeSantis (R.) blasted the media on Wednesday for predicting his state would be ravaged by coronavirus as severely as NY.

"We believe that it makes sense based on the data and the observed experience", DeSantis said. "They've got, like 5,000-plus fatalities".

"Since we entered phase 1, the number of people hospitalized in the ICU with COVID has declined by 26%", Governor DeSantis said.

DeSantis also took aim at New Jersey, a coronavirus hot spot, for placing COVID-19 patients in nursing homes.

"This virus has a disproportionate impact on the elderly", DeSantis said.

Despite having similar size populations, the difference in coronavirus deaths between NY and Florida is stark. Though it has a larger population - 21 million - and more high-risk elderly residents, Florida has registered just over 47,000 cases and some 2,000 deaths. As of now, it's unknown how many children currently have the COVID-19 related illness.

DeSantis has faced pushback from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., who suggested that the Florida governor was "premature" in touting his state's numbers. "Well, hell we're eight weeks away from that and it hasn't happened". "And to compare NY and Florida is sort of like apples and oranges", he told "The View" on Thursday. "I think our kids have been out of organized activities for a couple months now, and I think that we need to have a pathway to get it back".
