"While last night's NHLPA executive committee conference call got a little heated at times, and various individual players still have a wide variety of views on the NHL's (Return to Play) format, the exec committee vote by team is expected to result in NHLPA approval of the National Hockey League plan", McKenzie tweeted.

According to the report, details of player safety remain unsettled. "Only if we can make it safe for everyone - including trainers, coaches, people who work at the rink (will we return to play)". And Buffalo's very next game of the regular season would have been against Montreal. Those teams would play in a three-game tournament to stay sharp, SportsNet reported. Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, Las Vegas, St. Paul, Minn., and Columbus, Ohio, are considered top contenders. The league has said it wants to ensure a full 82-game schedule in 2020-21. "Nobody's ever seen this before, but at the end of the day, the Stanley Cup Playoffs are 16 teams, seven games a series".

The fourth seed in each conference would face the victor of the matchup between the 5 and 12 seeds, with the No. 3 seed taking on the victor of the 6-11 matchup.

The seven teams on the outside looking in would be Buffalo and New Jersey - which both sat just 0.007 percentage points back of Montreal - Anaheim, Los Angeles, San Jose, Ottawa and Detroit.

Notice how Buffalo didn't make it.

Quebec launches investigations into COVID-19 death of Montreal inmate
There are 1,516 people being treated for COVID-19 in Quebec hospitals as of Wednesday, down 268 from the 1,784 reported Tuesday. As of Wednesday, Quebec has seen 12,882 recoveries which is up 385 from the report a day prior.

The playoffs would be conference-based and would remain bracketed, replacing the divisional wild-card format the league has used since 2013. In the West, Chicago's chances sat at 2.6 per cent, while Arizona was at 16.6 per cent.

"In a time like this how can anything be super traditional?" he said.

"I just want to play, and I can do whatever format they decide", he said.

The Player's Association was voting on a proposed 24-team playoff format that would involve more teams (and, in doing so, would presumably interest more fans).
