Coronavirus: Weekly NI care home deaths fall again

People aged over 75 accounted for more than three-quarters (79.3%) of all Covid-19 related deaths in Northern Ireland.

There have now been a total 1,592 COVID-19 related deaths in Ireland, and 24,506 confirmed cases.

According to its figures there have been 664 Covid-19-related deaths in Northern Ireland so far.

However, nearly half of the 664 coronavirus-related deaths recorded by Nisra have happened in NI's care homes.

The 309 deaths in care homes and hospices involved 76 separate establishments.

A total of 38 people died in care homes the previous week.

These figures are based on mainly hospital patients having previously tested positive for the virus, whereas Nisra figures relate to information entered on death certificates, completed by medical professionals.

Thirty-three deaths happened at residential addresses or another location.

According to Nisra statistics, the highest number of deaths have been recorded in the Belfast council area with a total of 196 fatalities.

The number of deaths from coronavirus in Northern Ireland's care homes has fallen for the second week running.

As of 11am Friday, May 22, the HPSC has been notified of 115 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
