"When you limit hiring to people who either live in a small number of big cities or are willing to move there, that cuts out a lot of people who live in different communities, different backgrounds or may have different perspectives on things", he said. Zuckerberg said Facebook will "aggressively" ramp up the hiring of remote workers, though not all employees would be allowed to permanently work from home, at least at the start.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said Thursday he was "pretty confident" his company could help prevent attempts to influence the political outcome of the USA presidential election later this year. In a virtual town hall meeting with his employees, Zuckerberg said that Facebook employees who choose to relocate from the Silicon Valley may see a change in their salaries.

"Even if something isn't going to lead to imminent physical harm, we don't want misinformation to be the content that is going viral", he said.

But Facebook is a much larger company, with almost 50,000 employees, and it went further in laying out a novel proposed structure for remote work.

Zuckerberg told the BBC in an interview that the social network was better prepared to counter online misinformation campaigns but admitted Facebook was "behind" during the 2016 election which Donald Trump won. Facebook said the disruption was only to viewers outside the company and Mr. Zuckerberg was almost done. "I definitely think this is the longest stretch that I have worked remotely. Creating opportunities beyond these cities could also be part of the economic recovery", said Mr Zuckerberg.

Trump to Stop Taking Hydroxychloroquine ‘In 2 Days’
The anti-malaria drugs have been prescribed as a preventative measure in various countries to combat the coronavirus pandemic. A Wisconsin woman with lupus says she has taken hydroxychloroquine for 19 years and still was infected with the coronavirus.

Zuckerberg's surprise announcement - which followed Twitter's announcement earlier this month that employees would eventually be allowed to work from home indefinitely - will eventually be a "win win" for workers and employers alike, according to one expert.

The shift could help remake the USA job market in tech, as Facebook now has more than 40,000 employees.

The company would take a more "measured approach" with existing employees based on job function and past performance, he said, and set a January 1, 2021 deadline for staff to update the company on their new locations for tax purposes.

Zuckerberg pitched the idea as both a matter of satisfying employee desires and also as an effort to create "more broad-based economic prosperity".

To help small businesses affected by the coronavirus pandemic, the social media giant has also rolled out an e-commerce platform Shops.
