A transition period that allows student-athletes to gradually adapt to full training and sport activity following a period of inactivity.

NCAA regulations now allow only strength and conditioning coaches to work with athletes during the voluntary workouts, along with eight hours of virtual film review through June 30. The NCAA updated that ruling Friday by saying voluntary activities would be allowed in all sports starting June 1. Individual campuses will have discretion over those activities and be responsible for creating safety guidelines and supervision.

"At this time, we are preparing to begin the fall sports season as now scheduled, and this limited resumption of voluntary athletic activities on June 8 is an important initial step in that process", SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said. Earlier this week, the association voted to allow voluntary activities in football as well as men's and women's basketball. The Illini are targeting a mid-June return, while the Buckeyes plan to begin practicing on Monday, June 8 pending university approval.

"The health, safety and well-being of Mizzou's student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans is paramount and will be at the forefront in our decision-making process regarding the challenges we face with the COVID-19 pandemic", Mizzou athletic director Jim Sterk said in a statement. It stressed the need for controlled, safe environments and continued social distancing.

SEC announces voluntary in-person athletic activities to resume in June

The league announced that, effective June 8, student-athletes may begin returning to campus for voluntary workouts supervised by strength and conditioning personnel.

Enhanced education of all team members on health and wellness best practices, including but not limited to preventing the spread of COVID-19.

As part of the guidelines for reopening, student-athletes will be given a three-stage screening process that includes when they arrive on campus, within 72 hours of entering athletic facilities and on a daily basis of athletic activities. "Elements of the Task Force recommendations provided key guidance for determining the date of the return to activity".

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said Friday he thinks college football will return on schedule with at least some spectators.

West Virginia is scheduled to open the 2020 football season on September 5 against Florida State in Atlanta, Ga.
