The number of people infected with the novel coronavirus has topped 10 million globally, a tally by Johns Hopkins University showed Sunday.

The number of people who have contracted the coronavirus infection in Russian Federation has increased by 6,791, consistent with the daily increase dynamics of the past three days, the country's COVID-19 Response Center said in a daily update on Sunday.

A tally compiled by Johns Hopkins University registered the grim milestone on Sunday after India and Russian Federation added thousands of new cases.

In Texas and Florida, governors are now rolling back reopening measures in an effort to stem the virus' spread.

The US remains the worst-hit country with over 2.53 million infections, while its death toll exceeds 125,700.

As populous states including Florida and Texas recorded surging case numbers this week, state officials tightened restrictions on business again.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's leading health expert on the COVID-19 pandemic, spoke Friday during the first White House Coronavirus Task Force press briefing in almost two months, reminding Americans to consider how their actions have larger impacts on the health of individuals globally.

The United States accounts for the majority of global cases of the virus. One model predicts that Brazil will surpass the coronavirus deaths in July.

NY so far has recorded the highest death toll in the USA, with over 31,000 deaths. Gimena Sánchez-Garzoli, the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA)'s director of the Andes, told CBS News in mid-June that she wouldn't "trust" the Brazilian government's reported figures, and blamed President Jair Bolsonaro for an unwillingness to act and a lack of transparency.

Due to a lack of federal COVID-19 lockdown measures, states and cities in the US have had to implement their own preventative policies and guidance. California, the most populous state, which did institute severe coronavirus closures, also saw record cases this week.

Other countries have been more successful in containing the virus.

China's capital, Beijing, recorded a new outbreak linked to a food market this month, prompting a wave of testing, travel restrictions and contact tracing.

In total, more than 9.9 million people have contracted the virus, according to Johns Hopkins data.
