Sheriff Dewey Riley won't be without his wife in the upcoming slasher movie sequel Scream 5, as Courteney Cox has just been confirmed to appear in the film.

While plot details are now scarce, it is being reported that the film will follow "a woman returning to her home town to try to find out who has been committing a series of vicious crimes". That would be keeping with the current trend in horror cinema, which has seen long-awaited direct sequels in series such as Halloween.

Cox played Gale Weathers, an ambitious journalists who joins forces with Sidney Prescott and Dewey Riley to stop the Ghostface murders, in all four "Scream" films. They previously directed the critically acclaimed horror film Ready or Not. The screenplay, meanwhile, comes from James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, with original Scream writer Kevin Williamson (who also wrote Scream 2 and Scream 4) serving as an executive producer.

In a statement to Deadline, filmmaking team Radio Silence expressed their joy in having Cox on board:"We can't imagine Scream without the iconic Gale Weathers and are so incredibly thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to work with Courteney". Jamie and Guy's wonderful script does that legacy justice and we're so excited to bring the next chapter of Scream to life.
