Fauci testifies on coronavirus response

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci participates in a roundtable with U.S. President Donald Trump on donating plasma during a visit to the American Red Cross National Headquarters in Washington U.S. July 30 COVID-19 vaccine: Indian private sector can play a big role in global fight against Coronavirus, says Dr Fauci

Dr. Anthony Fauci dismissed a tweet by Donald Trump claiming the US global lead in coronavirus cases is because of increased testing.

For example, she said "Operation Warp Speed", the Trump administration's name for the push to deliver an effective COVID-19 vaccine by early 2021, sends the wrong message.

Discussing the key aspects that will help reduce in lag between the trials and manufacturing of COVID-19 vaccine, Dr Fauci said that it is important to ensure regulatory standards and review, harmonised data monitoring which will foster comparability, and financing the advanced vaccine production.

"Crowding together, particularly when you're not wearing a mask, contributes to spreading the virus", Fauci said when asked about protests spreading COVID-19.

Fauci attributes the different responses by each state to the country's inability to contain the virus.

Why it matters: He was responding directly to a tweet from President Trump, who took to the platform during the hearing to repeat his claim that the USA has reported the most cases in the world due to increased testing.

The United States has recorded almost 1.8 million new COVID-19 cases in July out of its total 4.5 million known infections, an increase of 66 per cent with many states yet to report on Friday. "The development of doses of vaccine, right now as we speak, so that they will be ready by the time we do show safety and efficacy, we'll be able to distribute it and it will be done by a number of mechanisms". Jordan asked. When Fauci said he was not in a position to make such a recommendation, the lawmaker retorted: "You make all kinds of recommendations.

Virus-hit Singapore Airlines suffers $800 million Q1 loss
Like many carriers around the world, Singapore Airlines has been hit hard by the pandemic and resulting travel restrictions. All seven freighters are operational while 33 passenger aircraft have also been deployed on cargo-only services.

In fact, there are many, very internationally respected doctors that are involved in each of those decisions.by and large, would you say that you and President Trump have been in agreement on most of those decisions?"

"Yes, sir, I was", Fauci answered. I'm telling you what is the danger, and you can make your own conclusion about that.

He showed the exchange between Fauci and Jordan, when the Ohio Republican pressed Fauci about protests and Fauci said "I'm not going to opine on limiting anything".

"So you're allowed to protest - millions of people on one day, in crowds, yelling, screaming - but you try to run your business, you get arrested?" Also testifying was Robert Redfield, Trump's pick to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Adm. Brett Giroir, Trump's coordinator for testing efforts at the Department of Health and Human Services. That includes the need to wear masks, avoid crowds and practice good hand hygiene, he said.

Trump, who appeared to be watching the proceedings, weighed against his Democratic critics on Twitter: "Our massive testing capability, rather than being praised, is used by the Lamestream Media and their partner, the Do Nothing Radical Left Democrats, as a point of scorn".

Democrats said the Trump administration initially prevented Fauci from testifying to the panel by saying he was unavailable for the entire month of July and relented only after House Majority Whip James Clyburn wrote to Vice President Mike Pence.
