In September, Unifor reached a three-year deal with Ford Motor Co., which included almost C$2 billion ($1.5 billion) in investments - including C$590 million in government subsidies - that will go toward producing battery-powered electric vehicles at the company's assembly plant in Oakville, a suburban town west of Toronto.

He says the automobile manufacturer has agreed to invest up to $1.5 billion at the Windsor assembly plant.

Unifor reached a new labor deal with Ford Motor Co. last month, which also secured a almost $1.5 billion investment in two plants and a commitment to build electric cars at a plant near Toronto. Dias said those talks are set to start next week.

He expects jobs to rise by over 2,000 more than exists in the Windsor Assembly Plant today, including 425 jobs that are now on layoff. Dias also said that while "the lion's share" of the money will come from Fiat Chrysler, there are talks occurring with the federal and Ontario governments to assist the company's investment.

Fiat Chrysler (FCA) has committed to a multi-year investment in assembling electric vehicles in Canada and to add up to 2,000 new jobs, a union representing some of the carmaker's workers announced Thursday. Etobicoke Casting will see more work in-sourced for the high volume Jeep Wrangler, 9-speed transmissions and potentially other products, leading to the recall of more than 100 members.

Last night's tentative agreement follows an earlier deal made with Ford last month.

NZ Ardern's party support slips a point in latest poll
Ms Ardern is on course to win Saturday's election on the back of her success in tackling the novel coronavirus in New Zealand. The initial outbreak was eliminated in the country by late May, thanks to some of the world's strictest lockdown measures.

Local 444 president Dave Cassidy says "it's a great deal" and he can't wait to bring it home to everybody on Sunday.

Unifor went into this year's negotiations with concerns about restoring the third shift at Fiat Chrysler's Windsor and Brampton facilities.

"This is the single biggest investment in the Canadian auto industry in years providing long-term job security for Unifor members", Dias said at a press conference.

Now it's up to the FCA workers to decide the fate of the tentative labour agreement with a ratification process to be conducted over the weekend.

The union said on Wednesday that negotiations had continued through the Thanksgiving weekend, as Fiat Chrysler challenged elements of the union's agreement with Ford, including wages and health-care benefits.

Once the tentative FCA settlement is ratified, the union expects to reach a new settlement with General Motors as well.
