Canada has essentially launched its first "safe corridor" with the unveiling of a new testing program with the State of Hawaii.
"Many Canadians love to visit Hawaii during the winter months to escape the cold weather, so the timing for this works well", Ige said.
Air Canada and WestJet will resume flights to Hawaii from select cities.
You need to have been tested and received a negative result within 72 hours of the plane's departure.
Guests travelling to Hawaii are responsible for ensuring they receive a test within 72-hours of their flight departing to Hawaii in order to avoid quarantine and will be required to display their negative test result prior to boarding.
All visitors intending to visit Hawaii must also register prior to travel. More details can be found here.
"WestJet's teams are working hard to rebuild confidence in air travel through important partnerships like this one with Hawaii's Trusted Travel Partner program and DynaLIFE". Alberta residents may be eligible to participate in the joint Government of Canada and Government of Alberta pilot project to test arriving residents as part of reducing quarantine.
Air Canada has routes from Vancouver to Maui and Honolulu starting on December 17 and routes from Calgary to Maui starting the next day. "It's really exciting for us to know that Hawaii really is the very first place that is a safe corridor for travel from Canada. We look forward to stimulating air travel and creating new opportunities for guests between our two countries".
Until now, passengers flying to the islands using a pre-travel testing programme were permitted to arrive and then upload their negative test results to a state database, allowing them to skip two weeks of quarantine. Please, do this. You must do this, otherwise you will face 14-day quarantine. "I flew to the US last weekend and on my return I was able to be tested at the airport and the quarantine was effectively lifted less than 48 hours later". "We have long advocated for safe and science-based strategies over blanket quarantines to enable a safe and secure resumption of air travel".
"We're pleased that we're able to work with partners to open up travel for Canadian visitors". And during that time, it is- they are not required to quarantine, but of course, we want to make- we would expect them to be cautious, of course, given that they will be traveling to Hawaii.
