Ford, Hillier to provide update on COVID-19 vaccine rollout today

COVID-19 modelling shows daily deaths could double by mid-February State of Emergency declared; stay-at-home order issued

"Under this order, everyone must stay home and only go out for essential trips to pick up groceries, or go to medical appointments", Ford said, adding that walking pets or going for walks is still permitted. Under this order, all Ontarians must stay at home and only go out for essential purposes, such as going to the grocery store or pharmacy, accessing health care services, for exercise, or for essential work.

All businesses must ensure any employee who can work from home do so.

Also commenting at the Tuesday event was Ontario Solicitor General Sylvia Jones who said the idea of the emergency declaration is to have people live by the restrictions of no more than five persons (beyond your family) at any gathering and to avoid any non-essential travel.

All non-essential retail will be forced to close by 8 p.m. and open no earlier than 7 a.m. However, the restricted hours of operation do not apply to stores that primarily sell food, pharmacies, gas stations, convenience stores, and restaurants for takeout or delivery.

According to survey data, the majority of Ontarians are helping limit spread by following health and safety measures as well as lockdown restrictions.

Toronto Mayor John Tory expressed support for the stay at home order and other measures following the provincial government's news conference.

Under both acts, fines are subject up to $100,000 and one-year imprisonment, $500,000 for individuals in charge of a business and up to one year in jail.

The 28-day state of emergency means police and by-law officers will have the authority to enforce the rules, with the ability to issue tickets.

Schools in grey zone urban areas will remain closed to in-person learning until February 10th.

Pogba 'happy' as Man Utd go top of the Premier League
Pogback on top: Paul Pogba's victor at Burnley took Manchester United top of the Premier League for the first time in three years. Despite Liverpool scoring more goals and conceding fewer, United are now in the driving seat for the Premier League title.

Brown said health-care providers will face hard choices in the weeks ahead.

"I have been calling for further action, based on the advice of Toronto Public Health, and I want to thank Premier Ford and his cabinet for listening to public health experts and taking some additional needed actions", said Tory in a statement.

"The latest modelling data shows that Ontario is in a crisis and, with the current trends, our hospital ICUs will be overwhelmed in a few short weeks with unthinkable consequences", said Premier Ford.

Ontario has reported more than 3,000 cases daily for the last week, with 3,338 new cases reported Monday as well as 29 new deaths. Everyone must stay home to save lives.

Last week, the government said they hoped to vaccinate all long-term care residents, health-care workers and essential caregivers in the province's four COVID-19 hot spots by January 21, with retired General Rick Hillier, who is leading the vaccine task force, hinting that he thinks they could complete the task earlier.

Ontario Associate Medical Officer of Health Dr. Barbara Yaffe said that while they believe the COVID-19 vaccine will be effective against the new variant, it will still take too long to establish a herd immunity against it.

The new measures came the same day the Ontario COVID-19 Science Advisory Table issued its latest modelling projections.

"We have looked, certainly, at the measures put in place in other jurisdictions, other countries, and curfews have been put in place with multiple other measures", Yaffe said.

Brown said COVID-19 hospitalizations have gone up 72.2 per cent in the last four weeks and the number of patients in the ICU is up 61.2 per cent.
