Otter, which uses AI to offer a low-priced transcription service, is bringing its smarts to Google Meet, letting users access live notes and captions.
Google has partnered with Otter.ai for live transcriptions and closed captions on Google Meet. The captions are provided in real time, and archived as a transcription of the entire conversation when the meeting is done. Users can install the extension through the Chrome Web Store.
Once installed, a "Live Notes" panel will launch directly in the Chrome web browser during Google Meet calls, where it appears on the side of the Google Meet interface. But with Google Meet, there hasn't been a good way to transcribe a meeting automatically as it happens; users report that Chrome plugins Google Meet Transcribe and Chat Transcribe don't perform well. They can also adjust the text size, then save and share the audio transcripts when the meeting has wrapped.
The transcripts themselves can also be edited after the fact by adding images and highlights, and they can be searched by keywords, as with any Otter.ai transcription. (You might need to click the puzzle piece icon to open the extensions menu to find it.) Then, you may be prompted to log in to use the extension, though I was already logged in when I tested it. Zoom, for its part, already has an integration with Otter.

Otter.ai login: After users sign into their Otter.ai accounts, the integration will be available for use during a Google Meet call.

Otter.ai said the Chrome extension works with all its plans, including the free version.
