Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minneapolis, called President Donald Trump a "tyrant" as she voted to impeach him Wednesday for the second time.

The US House of Representatives has impeached President Donald Trump for "incitement of insurrection" at last week's Capitol riot. Many House Republicans downplayed the significance of the insurrection and Trump's role, drawing false comparisons between the deadly storming of the Capitol by a largely white mob and isolated incidents of looting and violence related to civil rights protests last summer.

Biden said it was important that a Senate impeachment trial in the early days of his term not delay work on his legislative priorities, including cabinet confirmations, and urged Senate leaders to find a way to do both at the same time.

The article of impeachment has gathered at least 218 Democratic sponsors, already crossing the threshold for passage, in addition to support from at least five Republicans who have said they will cross the party line to vote for impeaching the president of their own party. "No true supporter of mine would ever endorse political violence", he said, striking a sombre and conciliatory tone.

The president's sturdy popularity with the GOP lawmakers' constituents still had some sway, and most House Republicans voted not to impeach.

"Hours went by before the president did anything meaningful to stop the attack". The President of the United States summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack.

During the 2019 impeachment vote, all 195 House Republicans voted against impeachment, however, as of January 12, at least five GOP members of the House, including Rep. Liz Cheney, the third-highest Republican house member, have said they will vote in favor of a second impeachment. "It's the only way to defeat fear".

Vermont's two delegates to the U.S. Senate, Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., have expressed support for impeaching and convicting the president before his term ends on January 20, though it's not clear when a Senate trial would begin.

A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell confirmed on Twitter a Washington Post report that McConnell had informed the Senate's top Democrat, Chuck Schumer, he is not willing to bring the chamber into an emergency session to consider removing Trump from office following House impeachment. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said he won't bring back the Senate from recess before January 19, a day before Biden's inauguration. The trial would proceed in the Senate even after Trump leaves office.
