There are now a total of 221 variant cases in the province with 214 of the B.1.1.7 (UK variant) and seven of the B.1.351 (South African variant). Of those, 5,222 cases are active while 122,071 people have recovered.

There were four more variant cases of COVID-19 found in Alberta in the past 24 hours.

Dr. Hinshaw provided the COVID-19 update for Tuesday, February 16.

The Enhanced COVID-19 Business Benefit is meant to provide additional support in cases where federal programs fall short.

"We are providing even more funding for Alberta job creators to help them deal with the devastating impacts of COVID-19".

Dr. Hinshaw says the variant cases are being closely monitored.

While a majority of the Senate, 57 of the 100 members, voted for conviction, it fell short of the two-thirds majority required. He is one of seven Republicans who voted to convict Trump of "incitement of insurrection" on Saturday.

Hinshaw said the ban on indoor social gatherings won't lift until the third step of the provincial reopening plan because of how much viral spread happens in those settings.

Right now it is good news that hospitalizations have continued to decline, as has the reproductive rate (R-value) of the virus, which currently sits at 0.85.

"Roughly half of the cases we have our travel or close contact of a traveler and then roughly half are those who are either community where we don't know the source or someone who is a close contact".

"We have implemented those interventions where we've seen the risks to be highest, and now we're considering whether or not there may be additional pieces to further reduce risk of transmission".

The province has also seen the number of people fighting coronavirus in hospitals and ICUs drop as well.
