Talk radio icon Rush Limbaugh has lost his battle with lung cancer.

"We, the Limbaugh family, are deeply saddened to announce that our beloved Rush has died", read the statement, signed by his wife Kathryn Adams Limbaugh.

The right-wing radio personality, whose impact on the GOP's more extreme messaging in the USA is well-documented, died due to complications from lung cancer.

"In my heart and soul, I know I have become the intellectual engine of the conservative movement", Limbaugh, with typical immodesty, told author Zev Chafets in the 2010 book "Rush Limbaugh: An Army of One".

He was first diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in early 2020.

"This is not good news, but what is good news is that he is the greatest fighter and victor that you will ever meet".

He awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Donald Trump at the State of the Union address shortly after he announced his diagnosis.

Limbaugh was one of Trump's most ardent supporters.

After he went off the air on February 2 for treatment, Rudy Giuliani tweeted a "get well" message. He missed only a few shows in October. And yet, here I am, and today, got some problems, but I'm feeling pretty good today'. It became the most listened to radio show in the US and was picked up by more than 600 stations.

Limbaugh's appeal and the success of his top-rated radio show arose from his brash and colorful style, his delight in baiting liberals and Democrats and his promotion of conservative and Republican causes and politicians.
