An AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine is prepared at the local vaccination centre as the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) continues in Hagen, Germany, on March 19, 2021.

The rising number of blood-clot cases and the growing moves to suspend or limit shots have added to the uncertainty around the AstraZeneca vaccine, which many countries around the world were relying on for their immunization programs.

On Tuesday, an independent vaccine expert panel in Germany said AstraZeneca shots should not routinely be given to people under 60 because of a rise in reported cases of unusual blood clots in the days after vaccination. That followed reports of 31 cases of the rare clots, mostly in women.

Professor Kidd said he wanted to reassure Australians the risk of contracting COVID-19 was "far greater" than contracting the "very small potential risk" of a rare blood clotting disorder as a side effect.

However, concerns continue to surface over the rollout of vaccines, with Queensland nearly out of the Pfizer inoculation and unsure when it will receive its next delivery. Some 13.3 million people in the Netherlands are eligible to be vaccinated.

The committee is expected to come with further information about the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The previously delayed shipment of 600,000 Moderna vaccine doses will arrive on Friday, with deliveries beginning on Saturday, the government's vaccine distribution czar, Canadian Army Major General Dany Fortin said.

Lareb said the events had occurred 7 to 10 days after vaccination.

Seven people in the United Kingdom have died from unusual blood clots after receiving the AstraZeneca Covid-19 jab. Prior to that, the agency disclosed five cases on March 18, out of 11 million shots.

Some countries have restricted use of the AstraZeneca vaccine while others have resumed inoculations, as investigations into reports of rare, and sometimes severe, blood clots continue.

As of March 24, there were 22 cases of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis and another eight cases of thrombosis with low platelets.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group said there would be no change to the clinical guidance on the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine as a result of the EMA's findings.
