"Dear Team", Mondale wrote. I am eager to rejoin Joan and Eleanor. Never has a public servant had a better group of people working at their side!
"Jill and I had the opportunity to speak to Fritz and his family over the weekend, to reflect on the years of friendship we shared, and how much we learned from and leaned on each other". My best to all of you!
On the day before he died, former Vice President Walter Mondale spoke with Vice President Kamala Harris on the phone, one of several conversations he had on Sunday with current and former politicians, his friend and former staffer Tom Cosgrove told Axios.
Biden honored the contributions of former Vice President Walter Mondale to his own career. "Through his work as a Senator, he showed me what was possible", Biden said in a statement. "He actually gave me a memo, classic Fritz, gave me a memo, as to what I should be looking for and what kind of commitments I should get to be able to do the job the way Fritz thought it should be done". After serving as a senator, he was vice president from 1977 to 1981 under then president Jimmy Carter.
Mondale, a native of Minnesota, had served as the Midwest state's attorney general from 1960 to 1964 and represented the state in the U.S. Senate before becoming vice president.
Mondale would go on to win the Democratic presidential nomination himself in 1984, and make history by naming a woman, US Rep. Geraldine A. Ferraro of NY, as his running mate before ultimately falling short to Reagan. They lost the election to Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.
Biden, the former vice president to Barack Obama, said Mondale greatly helped him prepare for the role.
