A spokesperson from a shadow government of ousted lawmakers - many of whom are from Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party - on Saturday welcomed the call for an end to violence in Myanmar as "encouraging news".

It's unusual for the leader of a military government in Myanmar to attend an ASEAN summit - usually the country has been represented by a lower-ranked officer or a civilian.

Jokowi was speaking after the 10-member bloc's crisis meeting on Myanmar, aimed at persuading Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, who led the military takeover in February that sparked turmoil in his country, to forge a path to end the violence.

The National Unity Government argued the general's invitation risked legitimizing the military coup and had called on Interpol to arrest General Min Aung Hlaing upon his arrival in Jakarta.

"There is a tremendous expectation on the part of the global community on how ASEAN is addressing the Myanmar issue". Following the coup, ASEAN, through Brunei, issued a statement that did not expectedly condemn the power grab but urged "the pursuance of dialogue, reconciliation and the return to normalcy in accordance with the will and interests of the people of Myanmar". The human rights advocate said: "It shows that ASEAN does not understand the situation in Myanmar. Political prisoners must be released immediately", he said, adding that a special envoy from ASEAN needed to be appointed to push for such dialogue.

Jury finds Derek Chauvin guilty of murder — George Floyd
Almost a year ago the Strip served as the original gathering point for groups like Black Lives Matter to demand justice for Floyd. For New Mexico Chief Public Defender Bennett Baur, the Chauvin trial was a rare case in which he welcomed a conviction.

With participants attending in person despite the pandemic, Indonesia's Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said on Friday the summit reflected the "deep concern about the situation in Myanmar and ASEAN's determination to help Myanmar get out of this delicate situation".

The junta has launched a bloody crackdown on protests which has left more than 700 people dead.

Indonesian police guard the site of Saturday's ASEAN emergency summit in Jakarta, which drew protests over the invitation of Myanmar's military general. "If that's the case, we hope that he will find a way to stop it even before the ASEAN representatives go to Myanmar". Amid Western pressure, however, the regional group has struggled to take a more forceful position on issues but has kept to its non-confrontational approach. Min Aung Hlaing was seen disembarking after arriving on a special flight from Naypyitaw, the Myanmar capital, according to footage on the official video channel of Indonesia's presidential palace. As a state party to a United Nations convention against torture, Indonesia has a legal obligation to prosecute or extradite a suspected perpetrator on its territory, it said. Laos, which has the least number of infections in the region but this week imposed a lockdown, also cancelled at the last minute.

Hun Sen made the remarks during an unofficial ASEAN summit initiated by Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, the current ASEAN Chair.
