The suspect died at a hospital, officials said. Since then security officials have said there is an ongoing threat from extreme right groups and Trump supporters.

The suspect, who was later pronounced dead, crashed into the two officers on Constitution Avenue outside the Capitol just after 1:00 p.m.

Speaking to MSNBC, and confirming some of the details of what took place, one Capitol Hill Police officer reportedly told the outlet: "We've been attacked".

Five people, including a Capitol Police officer, died in the assault inspired by Trump's groundless claims that he had lost the November presidential election due to massive fraud.

The Washington region remains on edge almost three months after a mob of armed insurrectionists stormed the Capitol as Congress was voting to certify Joe Biden's presidential win. At least two officers have been injured near the US Capitol, police confirmed late Friday, as a vehicle rammed into the legislative building.

They further added that the suspect did not appear to wrestle with the police officers. The officer's identity was not released.

However, White House press secretary said she is not aware of the situation at Capitol yet. The suspect was shot after getting out of the auto with a knife.

US Capitol Police have just identified the officer killed by a driver who rammed into a Capitol barricade on Friday. The suspect died at a hospital.
