Pfizer and BioNTech first put out data showing the shot was highly effective against Covid-19 in November, and then won emergency authorization for the vaccine in December. And it appeared to be fully effective against the worrying B.1.351 variant of the virus, which is the dominant strain circulating in South Africa and which researchers feared had evolved to evade the protection of vaccines, the companies said.

Updated results from Pfizer's late-stage study of its coronavirus vaccine show the two-dose shot's overwhelming protection is holding up six months after the second dose.

When this vaccine was conducting vaccine trials last fall, the variant was not as prevalent in the testing sample and there had been questions about how effective the vaccine would be against it.

In the trial, part of which took place in South Africa itself, six cases of the B.1.351 were found, but they were only found among those who hadn't received the vaccine, suggesting that the Pfizer vaccine could be 100% effective against that variant.

Pfizer has been studying the vaccine in more than 46,000 volunteers and has noted 927 cases of confirmed Covid-19.

Phase 3 trials carried out on 2,260 adolescents in the United States "demonstrated 100 per cent efficacy and robust antibody responses", the companies said in a statement.

He added that the study looked at severe disease but "it seems likely" that the jab "will reduce less severe types of infection as well".

Some 100 people aged 80 to 96 received their vaccine doses three weeks apart, before the United Kingdom adopted a policy of stretching the time between jabs to 12 weeks.

Experts anticipate Covid-19 vaccines won't be available for children 11 and younger in time for the upcoming school year.

People queue to get tested in South Africa.

Blood samples from all participants in the United Kingdom trial showed the original Wuhan strain was strongly neutralised after two doses of the jab.

Professor Paul Moss, from the University of Birmingham and leader of the UK Coronavirus Immunology Consortium, told a briefing he was surprised how well the vaccines have worked in older people.

'These mRNA vaccines - it really seems the level of antibodies they elicit are so high, they are persistent.

More than 36.7 lakh Covid-19 vaccine doses were administered on 1 April, the highest single-day coverage till now, the ministry had said.

There have been doubts raised about the effectiveness of vaccines on variants. "Our collaboration with local leaders and organizations is proof of just how important these voices are in their respective communities, and we will continue to work with them until every New Yorker has access to the vaccine".

"I think we can be confident about gaining control of variants with the current plans, and also leaving lockdown", he said. The participants will be monitored for protection and safety for two years after their second dose, reported CNN.
