However, with an Arctic influence the lowest temperatures will be felt in the north with the greatest chance of snow most likely over higher ground in the north and west of the UK.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) urged all road users to exercise care over the Easter weekend.

Freezing weather is set to creep in over the Easter bank holiday weekend and into next week as a forecaster said we will be "thrown back into winter".

Friday will be a dry day with widespread sunshine.

There will be a dry and settled start to the weekend but the weather will become unsettled and much cooler from Easter Sunday, according to Met Eireann.

On Friday night, figures will sink to as low as minus one degrees, with mist and fog expected ahead of Saturday which will also be a dry and sunny day.

Highest temperatures of four to eight degrees will drop on Monday night to between minus two and two degrees once again.

"The cold airmass will introduce the chance of wintry showers of hail, sleet and snow on Easter Monday and Easter Tuesday, with temperatures limited to around 3 to 7".

"It will stay cold on Monday night but winds will be lighter so frost will develop in places". Cloudy to begin with in some places, but sunny spells will develop through the day. "There will be a mix of clear spells and scattered wintry showers, mainly in the north and west and lowest temperatures of minus 2C to 2C", she added.

"The outlook into next week is for cool and unsettled weather with some wintry rain showers".
