A manhunt for a former Texas sheriff's deputy suspected in the fatal shooting of three people in Austin ended Monday when authorities said he was arrested without incident about 20 miles (32 kilometers) from the scene of the weekend attack.

Police identified Stephen Nicholas Broderick, 41, as the suspect, and said that he is armed and risky.

Austin police, fire and EMS responded to the city's Great Hills Trail and Rain Creek Parkway area around 11:42 a.m., where they found three people suffering gunshot wounds, according to officials.

He said that Broderick was a former deputy with the Travis County sheriff's office, which is based in Austin.

Stephen Broderick, 41, was arrested Monday morning around 7:30 a.m.in Manor, Texas, a suburb just east of Austin, KXAN reported. Officers arrived on scene following a 911 call. A child was involved but has been located and is safe, he added.

Simmons played linebacker at Elgin High School and originally committed to North Texas in April of 2020.

Steadman said she did not know the exact location where the three people were killed.

Duron said that Simmons was "an exceptional young man and leader among his peers". "He was the captain of our football team, a friend to everyone he met; and most recently, recruited to play football for the University of North Texas".

According to the Austin American-Statesman, Broderick resigned from the Travis County Sheriff's office a year ago after he was arrested on a charge of sexual assault of a minor. Police later described it as a domestic situation, but said the scene as "very active" on Twitter.

Broderick's wife filed for divorce and a protective order after his arrest, the Statesman first reported, citing court documents.
