Since then a number of the people I know, or my friends, have been arrested, my security has been removed, and the internet and phone lines have been cut.

The United States, which considers Jordan a critical ally and has partnered with the country for years on USA -led counterterrorism operations, said that Abdullah had its "full support".

Army chief Yusef Huneity earlier denied reports that the prince had been arrested, but said he was told to "stop activities that are being exploited to target Jordan's security and stability". The kingdom, which has scant resources, received some $1.5 billion in assistance from the U.S.in 2020 - a result of Abdullah's popularity among congressional leaders.

Hamzah is the son of the late King Hussein and his fourth wife, the US-born Queen Noor.

Yaser al-Majali, director of Hamzah's office, and Adnan Abu Hammad, who manages the prince's palace, are among the detainees.

Abdullah stripped his half-brother Hamzah of his title as crown prince in 2004, saying he had chose to "free" him from the "constraints of the position" in order to allow him to take on other responsibilities.

Around 20 individuals have been attested in Jordan for "security reasons".

Jordan, which is now under a nightly covid curfew that is set to expire in mid-May, has been hit hard economically by the coronavirus pandemic as well as by the fallout from massive waves of refugees from neighboring Syria.

The Washington Post said the former crown prince was "placed under restriction" as part of a probe into an alleged plot to unseat the king. "King Abdullah is a key partner of the United States, and he has our full support".

Security forces in Jordan are understood to have detained almost 20 people in total, including a former adviser to the head of state, on "security related grounds".

Baseball's All-Star Game moved from Atlanta over voting laws
He added: " Boycott baseball and all of the woke companies that are interfering with Free and Fair Elections". Post-renovations, Wrigley Field is already on the short list for one of the next All-Star Games, by the way.

I pray that all Jordanians will remember that I have always to tried to serve them to the best of my ability with what limited resources I have had, that I always will, and that God willing the situation will improve if we are able to come together and make our voice heard.

Neighbouring Saudi Arabia reacted swiftly to developments in Amman.

A statement issued by the Saudi Royal Court highlighted the two kingdoms deep-rooted ties, stressing that Jordan's security is an integral part of Saudi Arabia's security, according to Petra.

The secretary general of the Arab League, in a statement posted on Facebook, said the organisation "expressed full solidarity" with the measures taken to maintain security and stability.

The rare video blamed the government for corruption, incompetence and intolerance for public dissent and was viewed as a scathing critique of the ruling monarch - though King Abdullah II was not mentioned by name.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) also voiced support.

He had been a rising figure in Jordan, playing a key role in pushing for economic reforms in the cash-strapped country until he resigned in 2008.

"No one is above the law, and Jordan's security and stability is above any consideration".

In Jordan, that news of the alleged coup has gone public by way of brief statements and virtual silence from the local press has several political observers to speculate that the coup may be a cover story for another political maneuver, said Jordanian political analyst Amer Sabaileh.
