Reimer said that lower efficacy has been shown when second doses come prior to 12 weeks.

A letter by Quebec's immunization committee to public health director Dr. Horacio Arruda - which was viewed by The Canadian Press - said the AstraZeneca vaccine is 78 per cent effective if the second dose is given at least 12 weeks after the first.

Even with its offer to Taiwan, Japan will have sufficient vaccine for all of its residents aged 16 and older, having also signed supply agreements for the vaccines developed by US pharmaceutical companies Pfizer Inc. and Moderna Inc.

Dube said the government will announce its plan to accelerate second doses of the two other vaccines next week.

Currently, second doses are already being administered to long-term care, retirement homes, First Nations Elder care residents, high-risk healthcare workers, people with certain health conditions and First Nations populations.

While saying that an additional 200 million doses of any of the World Health Organization emergency use listed COVID-19 vaccines are needed to immunise 10 per cent of African population by September.

"Minimizing wastage will allow us to offer second doses of Astra Zeneca to fully vaccinate people faster, which in turn will support safe reopening of our communities and economy".

He has pointed to Britain's rapid vaccination programme as a success that will allow the economy to rebound before its peers. A spokesman for Mr Hancock said: "We absolutely reject Mr Cummings' claims about the health secretary".

That has left some who received that vaccine as a first shot wondering what drug they'll receive as a second dose.

Ontario put a pause on first dose AstraZeneca shots earlier this month due to an increase in reports of rare blood clots.

In a letter to her provincial and territorial counterparts, federal Health Minster Patty Hajdu encourages provinces that aren't able to get their AstraZeneca doses into people's arms by the end of the month to give them to provinces that can.

Individuals who received a first dose of AstraZeneca could receive a second dose of a different vaccine if required, officials said while warning that the province is still waiting for more guidance on mixing vaccines.

Moeti added that the continent requires additional vaccine doses as a matter of urgency amid supply crunch that has stalled inoculation targeting high-risk groups.

For those who received their first dose between March 8 and April 18, they can start booking their second dose in the week of June 28, depending on supply.

According to the health department, 285 adult vaccination centres have been set up in the province and 1,106,384 persons have received the anti-Covid jabs thus far.
