Phil Mickelson, who turns 51 in June, is now the oldest victor in major history.

Mickelson hit one tee shot into the water and another under the tire of a cart.

Phil Mickelson squandered a five-stroke lead on the back nine Saturday but recovered to maintain a one-stroke lead over Brooks Koepka at the PGA Championship heading into Sunday's final round at Kiawah Island, S.C.

The difference was the closing hole at Kiawah, easier as the wind shifted from being in the players' faces to coming from right-to-left off the Atlantic Ocean.

Mickelson went well long and played a flop shot, a risky maneuver to most everyone but him, and almost jarred it. Boros, who won three majors, was 48 years old at the time.

Not since Tom Watson won the 1980, 1982 and 1983 British Opens has a player won the same major three times in four years.

The crowd, limited to 10,000 people by Covid-19 safety measures, roared with every successful swing by Mickelson, creating an electric atmosphere all day on the punishing Ocean Course, the longest layout in major history at 7,876 yards.

Koepka fired a two-under 70 to stand on six-under 210 after Saturday's third round at windy Kiawah Island, but a closing bogey cost him a share of the lead with Mickelson, who could become golf's oldest major victor.

He will play in the final group with Koepka, a twosome with nine majors among them.

Phil Mickelson watches his tee shot on the second hole Saturday during the third round of the PGA Championship. ". That was the worst putting performance I think I've ever had in my career".

England on track to exit coronavirus lockdown, says UK Health Secretary
Public Health England (PHE) warned on Thursday that there is a "rapid rise" in the Indian variant in the North of England. They say other data shows it takes longer to reach maximum effectiveness with the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Louis Oostuizen knows the feeling. The South African never caught up, though he had his chances until missing a 4-foot birdie putt on the par-5 16th and a 5-foot par putt on the par-3 17th.

"I left a lot out there", Koepka said. He saved par from a back bunker. Bryson DeChambeau leads three players at 2 under after finishing with a 71.

Mickelson found water at the 13th and made bogey on Sunday's hardest hole, then missed a seven-foot par putt at the par-3 14th for a bogey that increased the tension, leaving Oosthuizen two adrift and the week's toughest holes remaining. When Oosthuizen made double bogey at the 13th, Mickelson owned a five-stroke lead with six holes remaining.

It was tight the rest of the way.

It was the first major victory for Mickelson since the 2013 British Open.

But it will be loud.

Spieth was headed back to his rental home to flip on the TV, a rarity for him. I thought 70 was about the highest I could have shot today. "It's pretty incredible. I have no way to relate to it, right?"

"And so I think that's a big part of it".

"The guy's got four good rounds on any golf course in him, and no one would bet against that".

The age-defying American took the $2.1 million top prize with an epic victory for the ages, producing a dazzling shotmaking display at windy Kiawah Island's while younger rivals faded. "It would be one of the epic moments in the history of the game, and that's not hyperbole".
