More than 19 million Canadians, or half the national population, had received at least an initial dose of vaccine as of Saturday, though less than five per cent have been fully immunized with two shots.

Youth who book an appointment will receive the Pfizer vaccine, which is the only COVID-19 vaccine now authorized by Health Canada for youth aged 12 and over. This will begin in the regions where the AstraZeneca vaccine was initially launched in pharmacies in March 2021.

The news announcement said those who choose next week to book their second dose in the coming week, will be getting it at a 10-week interval period, and not the 12-week period which is considered an optimal period.

To date, Canada has seen 1,352,121 COVID-19 cases and 25,162 virus-related deaths.

Chief medical officer of health Dr. Jennifer Russell said a person in their 50s received a first dose on April 11 and developed blood clot symptoms 17 days later.

He said full vaccinations to all should be available by the end of September.
