A dozen Democrats rebuked Omar's comments in a response statement, provoking House Democratic leadership to publish a letter shortly after that warned against "drawing false equivalencies", but fell short of decrying the remarks as antisemitic. "We have seen unthinkable atrocities committed by the US, Hamas, Israel, Afghanistan, and the Taliban", Omar said in a Monday tweet calling for the "same level of accountability and justice for all victims of crimes against humanity".

That day, Omar questioned Secretary of State Antony Blinken about how victims of war crimes could find justice given opposition by the United States to investigations via the International Criminal Court.

On Wednesday, the group of Jewish House lawmakers, including House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, argued that "equating the United States and Israel to Hamas and the Taliban is as offensive as it is misguided".

We appreciate Mrs. Ilhan Omar's stances in defending justice and the rights of the oppressed around the world, foremost of which are the just rights of our Palestinian people, but we deplore this unfair combination that is contrary to justice and global law.

In her later statement, Omar said her conversation with Blinken "was about accountability for specific incidents regarding those ICC cases, not a moral comparison between Hamas and the Taliban and the USA and Israel".

"We have seen unthinkable atrocities committed by the US, Hamas, Israel, Afghanistan, and the Taliban".

"The National Republican Congressional Committee tweeted Thursday, "@Housedemocrats must vote to strip anti-Semite @IlhanMN of her committee assignments".

Omar, a Muslim immigrant from Somalia, hit back at her colleagues for publicly criticizing her instead of discussing their objections with her privately.

Some Jewish Democrats hesitated to make a statement.

Child among 3 dead in Florida shooting
Deputies discovered three people, one adult male, one adult female, and one youngster, dead from gunshot wounds when they arrived. Spokesperson Teri Barbera for the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said that the incident was not an active shooter situation.

"Legitimate criticism of the policies of both the United States and Israel is protected by the values of free speech and democratic debate", they said.

"Speaker Pelosi's continued failure to address the issues in her caucus sends a message to the world that Democrats are tolerant of anti-Semitism and sympathizing with terrorists".

She also accused her critics of bigotry, saying, "The Islamophobic tropes in this statement are offensive".

Ms Omar's original comment drew comparisons to a remark by former President Donald Trump in 2017 when he was asked on Fox News about his "respect" for Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom the host called "a killer".

"Just how much more anti-American propaganda is Speaker Pelosi cool with before she finally holds Ilhan Omar to account?" "And now some of her own Democratic colleagues are ginning up the same Islamophobic hate against her, accusing her of giving "cover to terrorist groups" simply for exercising oversight over a criminal investigation", Slevin added. "She is a liability to the committee, and she's a liability to the United States of America".

Only 12 Democrats condemned Omar, which is less than 6% of the total number of Democrats in the House of Representatives. "We consider anything less to be a form of complicity". They said she should "clarify" what she meant. But there can be little denying the fact that Washington and Tel Aviv have indulged in actions not too dissimilar - and at times even worse - than the Palestinian and Afghan groups.

McCarthy has resisted Democrats' calls to punish Marjorie Taylor Greene, who last month compared Pelosi's requirement that lawmakers wear masks in the House chamber to Nazis requiring Jews to wear yellow stars during the Holocaust.

"You know, you got to do some egregious [stuff] to be taken off of a committee", he said.

Accordingly, we look to Mrs. Ilhan Omar, and all defenders of Palestinian rights, to describe things correctly and accurately, because this is the most important starting point for laying the foundations for a just solution to this chronic conflict.
