"As fire chief, I never thought when our firefighters face danger, they would face that danger at one of our community fire stations", Osby said.

A firefighter has been killed in a shooting at a fire station in Agua Dulce, California according to KTLA.

As the fire burned and sheriff's deputies amassed in the neighborhood, a man fitting the suspect's description was spotted in the backyard of the home with what deputies in a hovering helicopter described as an apparent self- inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Fire crews have since put out the fire at the firefighter's residence and officials discovered a body in the yard of the home, CBS Los Angeles reported.

"The shooting happened in the late morning at Fire Station 81, about 45 miles (72 kilometers) north of Los Angeles, in the Agua Dulce area near Santa Clarita", Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Trina Schrader said.

While fire crews were unable to approach the burning home on the ground, a series of water drops were conducted from the air to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby brush or structures. It was not immediately clear if there was a motive and an investigation is ongoing. The suspected gunman was identified only as an off-duty fireman who had returned to the station for unknown reasons and then opened fire on his two co-workers there. He was remembered as a "brave, committed, loyal member" of the department.

"I know that as firefighters we are in a profession of providing assistance to others", he said.

Osby said the firefighter who died had been with the department for more than 20 years and was a career firefighter, starting in a U.S. Forest Service Explorer Program.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis, who chairs the Board of Supervisors, confirmed Tuesday afternoon that a firefighter had died in the shooting. "At my direction, flags will be flown half-staff at all County buildings". "I can say that it's very tragic and sad that that would be a decision point of one of the members of the Los Angeles County Fire Department".
