John McAfee, the eccentric tech entrepreneur as famous for his antics as he was for developing the McAfee antivirus software, was reportedly found dead in a jail cell in Barcelona, Spain.

McAfee was charged last October in Tennessee with evading taxes after failing to report income made from promoting cryptocurrencies while he did consulting work, made speaking engagements and sold the rights to his life story for a documentary.

The charges covered three fiscal years from 2016 through 2018, according to the Spanish court ruling on Wednesday.

He had linked the charges filed by the Internal Revenue Service to his failed bid to run as a Libertarian Party candidate in the 2020 USA presidential election, a second such attempt.

He twice ran long-shot bids for US president and was a participant in Libertarian Party presidential debates in 2016. He claimed he has paid millions in dollar as taxes to United States govt.

Schmidt told OPB Wednesday that his office is still investigating several other cases involving officer use of force during protests.

McAfee was arrested at Barcelona airport in early October when he was about to board a flight to Istanbul with a British passport.

According to the United States extradition request filed in November and quoted in the ruling, McAfee earned more than 10 million euros ($12 million) in the four years in question, but never filed a tax return.

Spanish authorities arrested McAfee at Barcelona airport in October 2020 following an indictment from United States federal prosecutors on allegations of fraud and money laundering, as well as tax evasion charges linked to his failed bid to run as the Libertarian Party candidate in the 2020 USA presidential election. The reports indicate that authorities believe he committed suicide, but the cause of death has not been officially determined.

The US also charged McAfee for failing to pay taxes on his cryptocurrency earnings.

The statement didn't identify the USA tycoon by name, but said he was a 75-year-old US citizen awaiting extradition to the country.
